Drone Flyaway – a True Nightmare
A drone flyaway is every pilot’s fear. It’s a common fear for everyone that their drone might disappear unexpectedly. Drones designed by DJI are designed to automatically Return to Home (RTH) when they lose RC signals, but some users have reported flyaways. According to users’ flight data, flyaways are largely caused by a few simple mistakes. You can prevent your drone from taking off on its own by taking the following five steps.
1. Ensure that a home point has been established
Be sure to set your aircraft’s home point before you take off if you want it to return automatically! A GPS signal bar of at least 4 will be required. You will see a prompt in the app after setting a Home Point, and you will see a green Home Point icon on your map after setting one.
2. Drone Flyaway due to signal interference
Having GPS signals is needed, but they are not sufficient for your drone to return to its home point safely. Compass interference should also be kept to a minimum while flying your drone. Compass determines the drone’s orientation; GPS only identifies its location. After initiating RTH, your aircraft will turn around and fly back to its Home Point. It could also fly in a different direction if it doesn’t know which way to turn.
You will be warned if there is too much compass interference in the DJI GO app. In MC Settings – General – Compass, you can also verify if there is any interference nearby. Since the release of the Mavic 2 Pro, the newer drones have redundant compasses. Regardless, if one or both of these are in the red, then it would be best to recalibrate the drone or fly it somewhere with less interference.
3. Always keep your drone in line of sight
By seeing your drone yourself, you are much less likely to lose it or have it crash. The FAA’s UAV regulations include a requirement to fly within a visual line of sight for a good reason. It’s never a good idea to rely on the drone’s live video feed exclusively. As a consequence, you won’t be able to see the drone’s back or side. In some cases, “flyways” are simply accidents caused by the drone not being visible. Maintain line of sight at all times to stay safe!
4. If you are moving, you should change your home point
Once you take off, your Home Point will set automatically as long as you have a sufficient GPS signal. Moving around, however, will not change it automatically. Your Home Point must be reset periodically when flying from a moving vehicle or sailing from a boat.
5. Set the RTH altitude appropriately
The newest DJI drones have vision systems that let the drones bypass obstacles during RTH. However, setting an RTH Altitude is a good idea nonetheless. There is a possibility that the obstacle sensors won’t work in low-light. Additionally, the obstacle sensor might not detect pure glass surfaces or water bodies in the area. Moreover, the obstacle avoidance sensors may not recognize thin objects such as tree branches and power lines.
Drone Flyaway Coverage
With DJI Care Refresh service for DJI Mini 2 and Mavic Air 2, Drone Flyaway Coverage is now included. DJI Care Refresh service is also available for those who already had purchased DJI Care Refresh for these drones. If a flyaway occurs, you simply have to pay a service fee for a replacement.
Now that DJI Care Refresh has been expanded to include Flyaway Coverage, most of the main accident scenarios that can occur during flight can be addressed, giving you greater peace of mind every time you fly your DJI product.
